Your Grocery Budget | How Much To Spend on Food

Here’s How Much You Spend On ? Groceries A Month

Groceries, and food in general, are the number one budget killer. It’s crazy how much we actually spend on food a month without realizing it.

If you have a budget, then you probably know about how much you spend each month on groceries, but if you aren’t sure and don’t know what you should be spending, this video is for you.

I’ve been budgeting religiously for 4 years and I generally spend $100 a week on groceries. That’s what I recommend for a single person.

I definitely think you can get by on less, but I would rather have a bit of a buffer, instead of shooting low and then going over.

Of course it all depends on where you live and if you have a partner, kids, animals, etc…but the best rule of thumb is the percentage should be between 5-15% of your take home pay.

On average I’m in the 10% range, because food is more expensive in Tahoe, but I feel like $100 a week is completly doable, especially if you plan ahead and make a list BEFORE you hit the aisles.

If you have no clue how much you spend a month on groceries, look it up online as most banks usually categorize food and it is easy to look at.

If you have a partner or kids, I would budget in the 10-15% range of your total take-home pay.

My best tip: when you get paid (if it’s twice a month), pull out half of your grocery budget in cash when your first check hits, and the rest when you get paid the next, and ONLY use the cash. This prevents you from going over and staying on track.
